Lesson of the day: don't politicize the horrific deaths of innocent persons.

Today that lesson was (hopefully) learned by none other than Congressman Edwin Perlmutter, the 7th District Democratic Congressman who took to the airwaves in the days after the Aurora shooting to clamor for more gun control, an issue Perlmutter has long lobbied for.

From Perlmutter's Sunday morning appearance on CBS News:

"You know, should we reinstate the assault weapons ban? I think we should, and I think that's where it starts," Perlmutter said on "Face the Nation."

"We ought to be taking a look at how this guy was able to accumulate so much ammunition. He had enough ammunition for, like, a small army. There's something wrong about that."

This afternoon, the chickens came home to roost on Perlmutter's gratuitous political grandstand.

First it was Compass Colorado:

“Regardless of anyone’s views on gun control, Ed Perlmutter’s shameful rhetoric during this difficult time is hurtful,” said Tyler Q. Houlton, president of Compass Colorado. “Ed Perlmutter should follow Governor Hickenlooper’s lead and stop exploiting this national tragedy.”

Then it was fellow Democrat, Governor John Hickenlooper.

Per Fox31's Eli Stokols:

Gov. Hickenlooper: “I think the discussions of do we need stricter laws should probably wait until the families have grieved, and at least until we bury the people who we lost.”

As we said yesterday, shame on Ed Perlmutter for trying to use this tragedy to push his long-held liberal agenda.

Now is not the time.
